We Want to Hear From You: Feedback From the Lower Limb Amputee Community

Innovation in lower limb prosthetics does not happen when isolated from users and clinicians. It happens by listening to them.

At Ethnocare, our mission is to improve comfort and mobility for people living with lower limb amputation. One of the biggest challenges we aim to address is limb volume variation, a common issue that affects socket fit throughout the day.

That’s why today we want to do something simple, but important:

We want to hear from you.

Whether you are a prosthetic user, a clinician, or someone curious about prosthetic innovation, your feedback helps shape the next generation of solutions.

Understanding Limb Volume Variation in Lower Limb Amputees

For many transtibial amputees and transfemoral amputees, the residual limb does not maintain a constant volume throughout the day.

Changes in fluid levels, activity, temperature, and health conditions can cause the limb to expand or shrink, sometimes several times per day. Research has consistently shown that limb volume fluctuations are one of the main challenges in prosthetic socket fitting and long-term prosthetic comfort.

When limb volume changes, prosthetic users may experience:

  • Reduced socket stability

  • Pistoning or movement inside the socket

  • Skin irritation or pressure points

  • Increased risk of falls or discomfort

For decades, the primary solution used to manage these changes has been prosthetic socks. While prosthetic socks can help compensate for small changes in limb volume, they also introduce limitations such as inconsistent fit and difficulty adjusting throughout the day.

Because of these challenges, the prosthetics field continues to explore new prosthetic innovations designed to improve how amputees manage daily volume fluctuations.

Why User and Clinician Feedback Matters in Prosthetic Innovation

The development of better prosthetic solutions depends heavily on real-world feedback from both patients and clinicians.

Clinical research has shown that patient-reported outcomes and user experience play a critical role in improving assistive technologies and medical devices. Listening to the lived experiences of lower limb amputees and the insights of prosthetists helps ensure that innovations address real problems faced in daily life.

That’s why feedback from the community is so valuable.

When users and clinicians share their experiences, it helps us:

  • Improve prosthetic comfort solutions

  • Refine product design and materials

  • Improve clinical training and fitting protocols

  • Guide future prosthetic innovations

In short, your voice directly contributes to better mobility solutions for the entire limb loss community.

Have You Tried the Overlay?

If you are a lower limb amputee who has tried the Overlay, we would truly love to hear about your experience. Every story helps us understand how the product performs in real life and how we can continue improving it.

You can share your experience in whichever way feels easiest for you directly at jg.baril@ethnocare.ca :

  • A short voice message

  • A video testimonial

Your feedback helps us improve the product and helps other amputees discover new solutions that may improve their daily comfort.

For Clinicians: Have You Fitted Patients With the Overlay?

If you are a prosthetist or clinician working with lower limb amputees, your perspective is just as valuable.

If you have fitted patients with the Overlay, we would love to hear about:

  • Your fitting experience

  • Patient outcomes

  • Clinical observations

  • Opportunities for improvement

Clinician feedback helps us:

  • Improve clinical support resources

  • Refine training materials

  • Guide future product development

If you would like to share your experience, simply contact us directly at clinics@ethnocare.ca. Even a few words of feedback can make a meaningful difference.

Increase mobility and comfort with the Overlay, a transtibial prosthetic device.

Haven’t Tried the Overlay Yet?

If you are a prosthetic user interested in trying the Overlay, the best way to access the product is through your prosthetist or clinic.

You can speak with your prosthetist and ask them about the Overlay. If they need more information, they can contact their local distributor.

If you’re a clinician looking to order an Overlay from Ethnocare for the first time, you can also find your local distributor right here:

If you cannot find a distributor in your area, feel free to reach out to us directly at clinics@ethnocare.ca  and we will gladly help you get started.

Curious but Skeptical?

For clinicians and prosthetic users who would like to learn more, we regularly host educational webinars covering topics such as:

  • How the Overlay help manage volume changes throughout the day

  • Limb volume variation in lower limb amputees

  • Reimbursement process

These sessions are also a great opportunity to ask questions and discuss real clinical cases.
